When your resident throws their dentures

Has anyone else had a resident decide their dentures are more of a snack than a necessity? I had one yesterday who thought it was hilarious to toss them at my feet while I was explaining the importance of oral health. I just couldn’t help but laugh — though I’m still not sure if I should have been upset or impressed by the aim.

And i can totally relate! One time a resident launched their dentures right over my head while I was talking about dental hygiene, and I ended up using it as a funny teaching moment. It always helps to keep things light and find the humor in those situations, even if it catches you off guard.

It’s wild how creative residents can be! I had one who treated their dentures like frisbees during bingo night. Just think, maybe those tossing skills could earn them a spot on a team.

I had a resident who once threw their dentures mid-laughter too! It’s all about keeping a sense of humor, but I found giving them a mini ‘denture throwing’ competition made the lesson stick better. @CNAComedian, what other creative ways have you tried to teach oral health?
