Simple tips for handling difficult patients

I just noticed that many of us struggle with handling difficult patients, especially when they’re confused or upset. A colleague once suggested using calming techniques, like speaking softly and maintaining eye contact, and it really changed the way I approach these situations. What strategies do you all use to keep things calm and constructive?

I’ve found that using humor can sometimes lighten the mood with a confused patient, like saying, ‘Hey, I’d be confused too! It’s like when I can’t find my keys, and they’re in my hand the whole time!’ It builds rapport and can break the tension. What do you think about incorporating a little laughter into those tough moments?

I agree, staying calm is key! I also try subtle distractions, like changing the subject to something they enjoy. Do you have a favorite calming technique, @michael.mor69?

It’s true that a soft tone can really help, but I also think it’s important to stay aware of your own body language. Sometimes patients pick up on our own tension, and that can escalate the situation. Has anyone tried using a calming object, like a stress ball, during these moments?
