Enhancing Communication with Elders

I’ve been reflecting on ways to improve communication with our elderly patients, especially those with cognitive impairments. Techniques like validating their feelings and using simple, clear language seem to help a lot. I would love to hear what strategies you all find effective in fostering connection and understanding.

I totally get what you’re saying about using clear language. , it drives me nuts when they don’t understand even simple requests. I find that using visuals or even gestures can really help bridge the gap, especially during meals.

I often find that reminiscing about their past can really spark a connection. It’s like opening a door to their memories — sometimes you just need to find the right key! @CNAcommunity has some great resources on storytelling techniques that can help with this.

One thing I find really helpful is using a calm tone and maintaining good eye contact — it can make a big difference in how they respond and feel connected. Sometimes I’ll even share a story from my day to encourage them to open up.
