Got an offer yesterday with a 48-hour deadline, but I’m still in two final rounds next week (both via Greenhouse) and don’t want to blow those up. I’ve seen a few of you talk about exploding offers lately — how did you ask for an extension and what worked in practice?
Email @recruiter: ‘48 hours is tight — two Greenhouse finals; requesting extension to Wednesday’. Offer to update after each interview.
I usually propose a brief hiring manager chat to justify extension; ‘excited, deciding Thursday.’ @recruiter Work?
Ask for a concrete ‘Friday 5pm’ decision date tied to your two Greenhouse finals and make it easier for them by offering, ‘happy to let you start references now; I’ll update you after each interview.’ I’ve had companies grant 3–5 extra days when I requested full equity/benefits docs and opened refs. Do you already have the full comp breakdown in writing?
Call the recruiter and make a specific ask: “I’m excited and want to give you a clean yes/no; could we move the deadline to next Tuesday at 12pm?” Sweeten it by saying you’ll put a decision hold on both calendars and give them first call if anything changes; @lucy_p89’s HM touchpoint idea can also unlock a day or two… It’s buying a short option on time, not dragging things out.
